How IRCC’s table turns a score into a level

IRCC converts each skill on its own, with its own score bands. Your cells are marked in the table of the test you picked.

The bands aren’t the same for every skill. On the TCF Canada, NCLC 7 starts at 458 in listening but at 453 in reading.

In speaking and writing, one point can change your level. On the TCF Canada, 9 out of 20 is NCLC 6 and 10 is NCLC 7.

Each skill is judged apart. IRCC sets its minimum levels skill by skill, so one low score is enough to miss the minimum, even if the other three meet it.

The TEF score trap: two columns, one is right

A TEF Canada certificate shows every score twice. IRCC’s table only works with the “Équivalence ancien score” column.

  • Enter “Équivalence ancien score”

IRCC: “Only enter the scores for each language ability from that column.” The CCI Paris Île-de-France, which runs the TEF, gives the same rule.

  • A quick check

That column stops at 450 for speaking and writing, 360 for listening and 300 for reading. A bigger number came from “Score / 699”, and the calculator tells you so.

  • Tested between 11 December 2023 and 6 May 2024?

IRCC says you may need to update your profile, or it may refuse your application. The CCI changed its levels for a while, and that change was later reversed. Read the email the CCI sent you.

Which skill to work on first

The calculator puts the skill furthest from NCLC 7 at the top. It needs the most time, so it starts first.

  • How the order is set

First by levels still missing. When two skills are the same number of levels away, the one with more of its step still to climb comes first.

  • You sit all 4 parts again

A new sitting is a full test: the Collège Stanislas says the 4 TCF Canada parts aren’t taken separately, and the CCI says all TEF Canada parts are taken on the same day. Both ask for 20 days between two sittings.
