Know why every mark was given

9 sample essays for the 3 writing tasks, at NCLC 5, 7 and 9. Each mistake is struck through and corrected, with the reason in one line.

The comments sit under 4 headings built from the skills FEI says it assesses: task, coherence, vocabulary and grammar.

  • Grammar

Before a vowel, “que” becomes “qu’”.

  • Vocabulary

A more precise word exists for “alone at work”. Try to find it.

Stay inside the word limits

The counter shows the minimum and the maximum of each task while you type. Out of the limits, a text can be marked “A1 not reached”.

A second check finds sentences you copied from the task documents. FEI can mark a copied sentence “A1 not reached” too.

Practise one task in three steps

The same loop works for each of the 3 writing tasks.

  1. Read an essay at your target level

Pick the essay at NCLC 5, 7 or 9. Read the marks before you write.

  2. Write the same task with the checks on

The counter and the copied-sentence check run while you type. Your text stays in your browser.

  3. Compare and fix one thing

Put your text next to the marked sample essay, mark by mark. Fix the mistakes it names first, then write the task again.

Where the facts come from

  • IRCC’s own table

Every NCLC level comes from the table IRCC publishes for Express Entry. A script copies it; nobody types the numbers.

  • FEI’s rules

Word limits, the “A1 not reached” cases and the list of assessed skills come from the pages of France Éducation international, which runs the TCF.

  • Samples written with AI

AI writes each sample essay. A model from a second company then checks every mark. No examiner has seen them, so each level is an estimate.
